Hang up Lindsay and Audrie’s jerseys–they just made history.
Fans and loved ones showed up to the Municipal Gym at Balboa Park in San Diego to bear witness to Audrie and Linsday taking each other’s hand in marriage recently.
Guests were given courtside seating to the watch the two exchange vows. Lindsay and Audrie chose the rather unconventional gymnasium mainly because it is where they first met and bonded over the (other) thing they love most, basketball. For the close friends and family that attended, the gym was a perfect fit to the history, meaning, and uniqueness that the newlyweds share with each other.
This wedding also stood for much more: the definition of love. This was a same-sex marriage, which is still a controversial concept for many. That included both of Audrie’s parents and one of Lindsay’s. It devastated them, as Lindsay mentioned in her blog. To not have the people who raised you approve of who you choose to spend your life with creates wounds beyond repair. But it takes as much bravery as it does pain to marry your soulmate, even if it goes against loved ones’ wishes.
That is what Lindsay and Audrie did, in front of those that believe in love as a feeling that doesn’t have a sexual preference. It was a truly beautiful ceremony that touched on every positive emotion as well as true love. Balboa Park is lucky to assist in these two marrying, and I am lucky to have documented Lindsay and Audrie from their engagement photo shoot to now, as wife and wife.
